The Social Development Department has suggested three major changes to SRD grant applications. According to the Social Development Department, the low number of applications approved for the special COVID-19 social relief of distress (SRD) grant raised concerns.

By the end of June, fewer than half of the over 11 million applicants had been accepted.

As a result, Minister Lindiwe Zulu has published new draft regulations to modify the SRD grant’s provisions, one of which raises the allowable income threshold for applicants to R624.

The grant itself will remain at R350 until March of the following year. SASSA will decline any candidate who gets more than R624 into their ledger for each pertinent month.

The first is to raise applicants’ maximum income from R350 to R624, which is the food poverty line.

The department states that recipients’ bank accounts will in any case be checked every month. The second amendment seeks to eliminate the requirement that applicants indicate whether they still require the grant every three months.
The third concern is getting rid of the part of the agreement that makes the verification process performed by banks the primary criterion for determining eligibility.

The division has approached all pertinent partners to submit remarks on the draft guidelines.
