The minister of social development, Lindiwe Zulu, has proposed raising the income threshold for SRD applicants from R350 to R624. The public has until July 29 to provide feedback.

Ntombi Kwaza, 34, has not been paid since the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) approved her R350 grant applications several months ago. The Department of Social Development has proposed increasing the monthly income requirement for Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grants from R350 to R624 for Kwaza and thousands of others like her.

Kwaza, who is from Klerksdorp in the province of the North West, claims that SASSA “detected a source of income” when she applied for the SRD grant in August 2021 and November 2021. She filed an appeal against this decision, and in May of this year, she learned that all four months had been approved.

Despite SASSA’s announcement that payments for accepted appeals from the previous year would be made in June, she is still waiting for these payments. “They are torturing us. When they said I got approved, I was so happy and even dancing. Now I just feel like giving up,” she said.

Living with Kwaza is her boyfriend, three kids, two younger siblings who are still in high school, and her boyfriend. She hasn’t had a job for four years. For her ten-year-old and seven-month-old children, she depends on the R480 in child support grants.
