The kid’s essential parental figure in South Africa gets an award called the Youngster Backing Award. The award’s fundamental data can be seen as here.

A social award focused on lower-pay families, the kid support award is conveyed by the South African Government managed retirement Office (SASSA) to assist guardians with paying for their kid’s fundamental requirements. A ‘kid’ in this present circumstance is described as anyone more youthful than 18.

Who then can apply for the grant for child support?

If you are a parent, grandparent, or someone else who is primarily responsible for looking after a child, you are eligible to apply for the grant.

To be considered, you must meet the following requirements:

  • be a citizen of South Africa or have permanent residency.
  • If you’re single, you can’t make more than R48 000 per year, or R4,000 per month. Your annual (or monthly) combined income should not exceed R96 000 if you are married.

If you are not the child’s parent, you must provide proof that you are the child’s primary caregiver. As proof, you can use an affidavit from a police officer or the biological parent, a social worker report, or a letter from the principal of the child’s school.

To be eligible, the child must meet the following requirements:

  • be under the age of 18, not be in the care of a state institution, and reside with the primary caregiver who is not paid to care for the child.
  • To be eligible for the child support grant, both the primary caregiver and the child must reside in South Africa.

The grant cannot be used for more than six children who are not legally biological or adopted children. If someone else already has a grant for the child, you might also not get it.

In addition, SASSA will conduct a means test to determine whether an applicant’s income falls below a certain threshold in order to be considered for the grant.

How To Apply

The child support grant can be applied for by going to the SASSA office closest to you and filling out an application form in front of a SASSA officer. You will receive a receipt after completing the application, which is free. This receipt serves as proof that you applied.

The following documents must be brought with you:

  • Your bar-coded South African identity document (ID),
The child’s birth certificate, which must include an identification number,
Your pay stub, bank statements for the last three months, or pension slips, as well as any other proof of income,
If you’re unemployed, bring your Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) card, also known as a “blue book,” or a discharge certificate from your previous employer.
If you are not the child’s parent or guardian, a written note from the parent or guardian granting you permission to care for the child,
If you are not the child’s parent or guardian, please provide information on how you have attempted to get the parents to pay maintenance.
Information demonstrating that you are the primary caregiver for the child.

You will receive R440 per month for each child once you have been approved for the grant. When you complete your application, you must specify how you want the grant to be paid. You can receive the grant payment electronically into your bank account or in cash on specific days of the month.

By completing a form, you can change the method of payment at any time; however, the change will only take effect one month later.
