The government provides social grants to millions of South Africans who use them to make monthly purchases of essential goods and services. However, it’s possible that these grant recipients won’t be able to receive their funding as usual.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has requested that recipients of permanent grants make alternative plans in order to collect their funds. This is because grants can’t be paid out due to a system error at pay points.

Around 18 million permanent social grants are given out each month by Sassa. The Older Persons Grant, Disability Grant, Child Support Grant, Foster Care Grant, Grant in Aid, War Veterans Grant, and Care Dependency Grant are among these permanent grants.

Each month’s first week sees the distribution of permanent grants. Many recipients of these grants pick them up at a South African Post Office (SAPO) location.

However, due to Sapo’s system issues, they won’t be able to pick up their grants this week at a Post Office.

The organization explains that Sassa gold card holders can withdraw their funds from ATMs and retailers. Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, and Boxer are the retail stores.

Enoch Godongwana, the finance minister, declared that social grants would rise faster than inflation. He made the announcement during his opening speech for the 2022 budget.

Here Are The SASSA Grant Increases

  • Old Age grant will increase to R1 985 from R1 890 (5% increase)
  • Old Age grant (above 75 years old) and War Veterans grant will increase to R2 005 from R1 910 (5% increase)
  • The Care Dependency grant will increase to R1 985 from R1 890 (5% increase)
  • The Foster Care grant will increase to R1 070 from R1 050 to (a 1.9% increase)
  • Child Support Grant will increase to R480 from the current R460 (4.3% increase)

In the medium term, the Department of Social Development will receive the largest allocation, totaling R58.6 billion, according to Minister Godongwana.

According to the 2022 Budget Review from National Treasury, the total number of grant recipients in the nation will rise by an average of 1.5%. This indicates that from 18.4 million in 2021/2022 to 19.2 million in 2024/25, there will be an increase in the number of grant recipients.

The 10.5 million recipients of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) R350 grant are not counted in the above statistics.

Over the MTEF period, “the child support and old age grants together account for more than half of the total grant expenditure. According to the document, 17.2 million beneficiaries will receive support from these grants in 2022–2023.
