• The South African government provides social subsidies to citizens in need. The SASSA is in charge of social grants in South Africa. Social grants are offered to those who are on the verge of going hungry and require assistance from the government to enhance their standard of living. Among these are typically the elderly, those with impairments, and parents of young children. To be eligible for a social grant, you must be a South African citizen, a lawful permanent resident, or a refugee (proof of such status must be provided). They must be South African nationals as well.

What is a means test?

• The child must be under the age of 18 and permanently incapacitated, as established by a medical officer, to be eligible for the care dependency award.
