Black Sash has demanded that the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) present a strategy to address the sudden closure of its Western Cape Khayelitsha office.

On July 14, 2022, the Sassa office in Khayelitsha was closed for renovations without informing the community.

Social award recipients showed up at the workplaces in the early hours of the early daytime wanting to be the preferred choice, just to be informed hours after the fact by safety officers that the workplaces were shut. Residents were perplexed and enraged as a result.

In Khayelitsha, there was only one Sassa office serving hundreds of beneficiaries.

The organization requires Sassa to immediately communicate alternative plans for restoring services in the area.

“It has created unexpected difficulty in accessing social grants as well as placing an unforeseen financial burden on beneficiaries who now have to bear the cost of the transportation to alternative Sassa sites in order to receive services,” the organisation said in a statement.

The provincial Department of Social Development owned the building where the Khayelitsha Sassa office was located.

Shivani Wahab, a spokesperson for Sassa Western Cape, stated that they were informed that the renovations would be finished in 2023.

“Since March 2022, Sassa has been working towards identifying suitable alternative accommodation,” said Wahab.

A Sassa employee at the Khayelitsha office, who requested anonymity, stated that they were also dissatisfied due to their inability to report for work and their lack of knowledge regarding when the offices would reopen.

Black Sash stated that they have provided beneficiaries with assistance in locating an alternative plan and a communication strategy.

They stated that they have been awaiting confirmation of a meeting to resolve the issue from the Sassa acting regional manager in the province.

For the time being, the beneficiaries must travel considerable distances to other Sassa offices, which incurs additional transportation costs.
