Applications for the Special Covid-19 R350 Social Relief of Distress Grant have opened, and there are numerous ways to apply; continue reading to learn how to apply via Whatsapp.

The Special Covid-19 R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant has been reintroduced, and applicants can apply from August 6 to March.

The grant was first introduced in 2020, when the Covid-19 pandemic first arrived in South Africa, to assist those aged 18 to 65 who had lost their jobs or were unable to secure jobs at the time.

There are several ways for applicants to apply for the grant, but all applications must be submitted electronically/digitally.

How to Apply for an SRD Grant Using Whatsapp

  • Add 082 046 8553 as a contact on your phone
  • Send a message to this number on WhatsApp saying “hi.”
  • You will then receive a response, to which you should respond with the word ‘help.’
  • You will be given several options; select ‘4’.
  • This will take you to the Unathi Sassa platform message, to which you should respond ‘SRD.’ You must then confirm whether you are applying for yourself or someone else.
  • The application process now begins, and you must submit your name, surname, and ID number in the message.
  • You will then receive a Whatsapp message with the next steps.

When the application is approved, the applicant will receive an email requesting their banking information. It is critical that the bank account or cellphone number provided for payment be registered in the name of the approved applicant so that the grant can ensure that the payment reaches the intended recipient. If the beneficiary provides their bank information, the payment will be made directly into their bank account.

For those without bank accounts, the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) will pay via the South African Post Office (Sapo)/Post Bank or via bank mobile money transfers (cash send).

There is no need to submit multiple applications. As soon as the application is approved, you will receive confirmation.

Those who applied for the grant in the previous round will be required to reapply. Clients who previously canceled the grant and want to reactivate it due to a change in circumstances are welcome to reapply.

The following are the requirements for the SRD grant:

  • South African citizens/permanent residents/refugees/asylum seekers/holders of special permits
  • Unemployed
  • Have no other means of earning a living or receiving financial support.
  • Between the ages of 18 and 60
