Cape Town, South Africa – The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) has urged beneficiaries to withdraw their grants from local merchants and ATMs using the gold card.

This comes as South African Post Office stores encounter system difficulties.

According to Sassa, grants can be withdrawn at any retail establishment nationwide that offers the cash-back option, including Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, and Boxer.

Grant recipients are reminded that they can use their Sassa gold cards to make purchases anywhere that accepts bank card transactions, as the gold cards operate fully within the National Payment System, just like any other bank card.

According to the company, the system outage at Post Office locations affects all Postbank clients who want to make over-the-counter transactions such as deposits and withdrawals.

Lucas Ndala, Postbank’s interim CEO, apologized for the inconvenience.

“We apologise to our Sassa social grants beneficiaries and Postbank customers for the inconvenience caused as we take every service interruption seriously.
“Our IT teams have been tasked to resolve the technical challenges affecting the over-the-counter branch transactions as a matter of urgency.

“All customers are advised to utilise retailers and ATMs as alternatives while we are working on retaining full services availability within Post Office branches,” Ndala said.

Customers and stakeholders, he says, may be confident that Postbank’s entire experience and services remain a top priority.

Postbank will notify you once the issue has been rectified.

Abraham Mahlangu, the acting CEO of Sassa, stated that the company employs a fully functional bank card that is interoperable with all National Payment System access points.

“This thereby limiting the impact on clients when the system of one bank, merchant or pay point is down. We will continue to diversify these channels as much as possible to reduce the reliance on any one particular access point as we continue to pay the right social grant to the right person at the right time and place,” Mahlangu said.
