The government provides social subsidies to South African individuals in need. SASSA is in charge of social grants in South Africa. People who are at risk of sliding into poverty and require government aid to enhance their standard of living are eligible for social grants. Among these are typically the elderly, those with impairments, and parents with young children. A social grant must be applied for by a South African citizen, legal permanent resident, or refugee. They must also be South African citizens.
What is a means test?
- Child support, disability, care dependency, and social relief of distress are all subject to a “means test.” The means test will be used by SASSA to determine your eligibility for a social grant based on your income and assets. The means test determines your eligibility for a grant designed for people who are unable to support themselves.
Care dependency allowance
Grants for care dependence may be available to parents with handicapped children who work full-time. What total amount of funding will be distributed as part of this grant?
- R1 860 per child, per month.
How do you know if you’re eligible for the grant?
- The child must be under the age of 18 and permanently disabled, as determined by a medical officer, to be eligible for the care dependency grant. If you’re married, you and your spouse must both meet the minimum eligibility requirements for the means test. The articles that follow will help you with your Sassa application.
