What is a staff nurse?

In a healthcare facility, a staff nurse is a nonsupervisory nurse who provides routine care to patients. Staff nurses typically report to higher-ranking nurses or healthcare professionals, such as nurse practitioners, advanced practice registered nurses, directors of nursing, or physicians. The term “staff nurse” is typically used to describe nurses who work in hospitals, but staff nurses can also work in psychiatric care facilities, nursing homes, or rehabilitation facilities.

A staff nurse is a type of registered nurse. To get a license as a nurse, they must have graduated from an approved nursing program and passed the NCLEX-RN exam. Greeting patients, evaluating their health, and measuring vital signs like temperature, pulse rate, breathing rate, blood pressure, and blood sugar levels are all performed by staff nurses. They assist physicians with diagnostic tests, administer medications, prepare patients for hospital discharge, and give patients instructions for aftercare or at-home care.

The intensive care unit, the emergency department, the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), the medical-surgical unit, and the pediatrics department are all places that staff nurses can work. Because they frequently interact with patients and provide direct patient care, they are also referred to as “bedside nurses.” A position as a staff nurse can lead to other nursing positions or can be a fulfilling, hands-on career in and of itself.
