The Texas Board of Nursing (BON) approves nursing education programs and regulates the practice of nursing. The board’s mission is to ensure that nurses are qualified to practice nursing in order to safeguard Texas residents.

The BON establishes standards for nursing practice, conducts investigations into complaints made against nurses, resolves those complaints, and imposes disciplinary sanctions (when necessary).

Anyone can complain to the Texas Board of Nursing at any time. Patients, family members, coworkers, employers, or anyone else who believes a nurse has broken the Nursing Practice Act (NPA) can file these complaints.

The complaint information is kept private throughout the entirety of the BON investigation. The BON typically receives more than 16,000 complaints about nurses each year, but the nurses will never know who made the complaint.

Some of the most common complaints about nurses are as follows:

  • sexual misconduct
  • fraud, theft, or deception
  • substance abuse (alcohol and drugs)
  • lying or falsification of records
  • criminal arrests
  • violation of boundaries
  • expired nursing licenses

A BON investigation team examines the evidence to see if the Nursing Practice Act has been broken after a complaint has been filed. The BON’s disciplinary measures can include the following: fines, reprimands, probation, remedial education, license suspension, and revocation.

The orders of any disciplinary action taken by the Texas Board of Nursing against a nurse are made public and posted on the website of the Texas BON. This could affect your ability to practice nursing not only in Texas but also in the 24 other states that are a part of the Nursing Licensure Compact (NLC), as well as in other states in the United States.

If the Texas Board of Nursing has contacted you, it’s important to know that this is the beginning of a legal process that could affect your ability to practice nursing. We are able to assist you in defending your license and provide you with support throughout the entire process, including concerns regarding:

  • expired nursing license
  • nursing license reinstatement
  • denial of nursing licensure
  • enforced suspension for nurses
