TVET Colleges (Technical and Vocational Education and Training) are public tertiary institutes that provide a variety of practical training options to students with and without matriculation. TVET courses can be funded through the government’s NSFAS scheme. Participants are highly employable because the courses are practical and relevant to the community.

TVET Colleges are located in the community. They conduct research to determine what skills are required in your community and provide training in these areas. This means that there are jobs available for TVET College students. These are frequently referred to as “scarce skills.”

TVET courses are hands-on. While you will spend some time in the classroom, the majority of your learning will take place in the workplace. When you complete your course, you will already have work experience, making you more employable than someone who only has classroom-based learning.

TVET colleges offer study options for people who have completed Grade 9, and there are no age restrictions. You can obtain your matriculation certificate at college. The National Vocational Certificate is a practical career-focused matriculation. There are also other certificates available for study without matriculation.
College offers certificate and diploma programs for students who have completed their matriculation (NQF levels 4,5,6).
TVET courses are recognized. This means they are widely accepted in terms of employment and further education. Non-accredited courses are frequently offered by private colleges. They are costly and do not provide opportunities for further study.

HOW TO APPLY

  • Locate the nearest college.
  • Call the college and request an appointment with a Careers Advisor. The consultation is complimentary. The careers advisor will conduct a careers test with you to assist you in determining the best study area for you. You will also be required to take language and math tests. The career advisor will then assist you in selecting the best course for you.
  • You will fill out an application at the college or online, as well as an application to NSFAS. See this page for information on how to apply to NSFAS.
  • The deadline for NSFAS applications is the end of November.
