Exam results for over 20,000 students at around 50 technical and vocational education training (TVET) colleges across the country have been halted while the Department of Higher Education and Training investigate the leaking of exam papers before they were written.
According to the Sunday Times, exam questions and answers for 25 subjects in the natural sciences category, including math, engineering, artisan studies, and more, were leaked to an unknown number of students days before they were written.
The department has now postponed the release of results that were scheduled for the end of August in order to conduct an internal investigation into the matter, and the results are expected to be released on October 16th.
The Department of Basic Education has finally made a breakthrough in an investigation that began in December 2020, following the leak of matric exam papers in eight provinces.
The two suspects who were accused of leaking the National Senior Certificate question paper in December 2020 were arrested after appearing in court recently in Johannesburg.
(Accused 1) Themba Shikwambane (32) and (Accused 2) Thokozile Duze (44) have been charged with theft, according to reports.
The charges stem from the distribution of leaked Maths P2 question papers in provinces. Rufus Poliah, the department’s Chief Director of National Assessments and Public Examinations, revealed that the question paper had been leaked in eight of the nine provinces.
This comes after the accused were both released on bail and appeared in court several times while the investigation was still ongoing.
The Education Department praised the Hawks for their efforts, which aid in understanding how the system was undermined and closing the gap while prosecuting offenders.
Shikwambana worked for a Johannesburg-based company that was contracted by the Education Department to print exam papers for the class of 2020, according to the Hawks.
The National Investigations Task Team (NITT) team made recommendations such as withholding learner results while additional investigations were conducted or issuing the results while investigations were conducted.
Umalusi also stated at the start of this year that these malpractices do not reflect well on him.
