The purpose of the Further Education and Training Colleges Act 16 of 2006, also known as the Continuing Education and Training Act, is to:

  • to establish, govern, and fund public further education and training colleges;
  • to provide for the employment of staff at public further education and training colleges;
  • to provide for the registration of private further education and training colleges;
  • to promote quality in further education and training;
  • to provide for transitional measures and the reinstatement of

  • In order to prepare students to work effectively in a skilled trade, technical vocational, education and training (TVET) colleges focus on vocational and occupational education and training.

What distinguishes public from private FET colleges?

  • Funding is the primary distinction between public and private FET colleges. The government provides funding and support for public FET colleges. Students are the only source of funding for private colleges. You may be confident that all of the courses at public FET institutions have been approved by the Department of Education (DoE).

Are TVET institutions public organizations?

  • Public funds are used by the Department of Higher Education and Training to support public TVET colleges (DHET).
