There is only one university in the Northern Cape. It is, however, a really good one.

Sol Plaatje University

The first university established in the Northern Cape and the first after Apartheid was Sol Plaatje University (SPU). Both undergraduate and graduate degrees are available at SPU.

Positioning itself as a niche university, SPU offers academic programs of a high intellectual nature in fields that support South Africa’s drive to create a country that is proud of its history and roots.

SPU only has one campus, which is situated in Kimberly’s Civic Centre.

Students can also stay on campus with Sol Plaatje. At Sol Plaatje University, residences are furnished with WiFi, offer study, social, and recreation areas, and have onsite security available around-the-clock. The on-campus housing at SPU can house 60% of all students.

SPU has four residences on-campus.

  • Moroka Hall of Residence, located on the central campus and accommodates 550 students
  • Mhudi Hall, located off Du Toitspan Road and accommodates 62 students
  • Ra-Thaga Hall, located off Edward Street and accommodates 112 students
  • Tauana Residence, located off Jacobus Smit Avenue and accommodates 220 final-year students
