GEMP, which stands for Graduate Entry Medical Programme, is currently being offered by Wits University. The GEMP permits entry into the third year of the MBBCh degree for suitably qualified candidates who satisfy specific minimum requirements.

These candidates now have the chance to finish their undergraduate medical education in just four years, following which they will begin their internship and the legally required community service period.

The minimal criteria for admission to GEMP

a finished undergraduate degree from an accredited university, preferably at the Bachelor’s or Bachelor of Technology level, with a final two-year average of at least 60%. National diplomas, technical diplomas, certificates, and other credentials of a similar nature are not admissible. Candidates who are pursuing their current university degree in their final year of study may also apply.

  • Sciences Requirements: (ALL of the following are compulsory)*
  • 50% for first-year university degree-level Biology (Full course). Equivalent courses such as Anatomy, Physiology, Zoology, Life Sciences, and similar courses will also be considered.
  • 50% for first-year university degree level Physics (Half Course).
  • 50% for first-year university degree level Chemistry (Half Course).

The aforementioned three courses MUST be finished in the first year of a bachelor’s degree program or higher. Studies leading to a diploma or certificate won’t be taken into account.

  • Mathematics Requirement: (One of the following possibilities) *
  • 60% for Matric Mathematics (National Senior Certificate (NSC) – 2008 to present) or 
  • Pass on Higher Grade or 60% on Standard Grade for Matric Mathematics (Pre-2008) or
  • 50% for a full-course Mathematics at the first-year university degree level.
  • International applicants:

  • Language Requirement:  (One of the following possibilities) *
  • 60% for Matric English Home Language or First Additional Language (National Senior Certificate (NSC) – 2008 to present) or
  • Pass on Higher Grade or 60% on Standard Grade for Matric English First or Second Language (Pre-2008) or
  • 50% for a full-course English at the first-year university degree level.
  • International applicants:
  • Score of at least 7 for the IELTS test (International English Language Test Systemor
  • A pass in English Language at the GCSE/GCE/IGSCE Ordinary level (or equivalent examination) or
  • Pass in English in a school-leaving examination equivalent to the South African National Senior Certificate or

A letter from the tertiary institution confirming that instruction and exams were held in English is required if the tertiary studies were completed there.

The prerequisites (Numbers 2, 3, and 4) with an asterisk (*) MUST have been satisfied before the application deadline of June 30. The Senior Faculty Officer must receive the results.

The National Benchmark Test is not required of applicants who are only applying for the GEMP in the Faculty of Health Sciences. A candidate must take the NBT if they are also applying to the Faculty for a different degree (for instance, pharmacy or physiotherapy), but their NBT scores will not be taken into account when they apply for a GEMP.

  • Graduate Entry Medical Program is the name of the program (GEMP). The program will last four (4) years in total.

How long is Gemp at wits?
3-year period

  • The GEMP program is broken down into phases that last three years. One lecture in GEMP 1 introduces students to clinical skills in ophthalmology. In their Neurosciences block, GEMP 2 students have an introductory week to ophthalmology.
