The Bachelor of Architectural Studies (BAS) program at the University of Cape Town (UCT) provides a stand-alone exit degree as well as admission to a professional architectural program or postgraduate programs in the city and regional planning, urban design, and landscape architecture. The degree also permits successful graduates to pursue a variety of employment options, including construction and property economics.

The Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree has its own standing in the labor market for admission into architectural and other design and planning offices, interior design, landscape architecture, property development, and the building sector. Graduate students are also eligible to seek professional registration as senior architectural technicians.

Overview of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies
  • The first year of the Bachelor of Architectural Studies curriculum is dedicated to familiarizing students with precedent, elementary design tasks, and later, the design of more complicated settings, sites, structures, and complexes. Building technology (construction, environmental control, structures, and so on), representation (manual and digital), communication (written and vocal), and the history and theory of architecture and allied disciplines are other prominent study subjects.
  • Studio programs consume almost half of student time and energy, and many ancillary courses or projects are inextricably intertwined. Formal lectures, informal talks, and theory of design seminars are held in the studios of the University of Cape Town.
  • Each student enrolled in UCT’s Bachelor of Architectural Studies degree is assigned a workstation in the studio. During Design Studio lessons, all students are obligated to work in the studios, and they may choose to work in the studios after hours. All students must bring their own books and drawing materials.
