what is the qualification for nursing 2024-2025
In the field of nursing, exemplary and selfless caregiving is the responsibility of a licensed healthcare professional. The following is a breakdown of the post-matriculation requirements for this career path.
- When it comes to the day-to-day operations of a typical hospital, a licensed nurse plays a role that is just as crucial as that of a licensed doctor.
- A career in nursing might be a good fit for someone who wants to put their own interests aside and put the needs of others ahead of their own.
Nevertheless, in order to become a licensed nurse, a number of steps must be taken. To begin, there are three distinct nursing qualifications that can be pursued:
- A Senior Certificate in Nursing
- A Diploma in Nursing
- A Bachelor of Science in Nursing
- (There is also a Baccalaureus Curationis (BCur) degree that is offered as an alternative).
Following are the prerequisites for each of these course options:
Higher Certificate in Auxiliary Nursing (1 year):
- The student must have earned their National Senior Certificate (NSC) at the conclusion of their matriculating academic year with an overall NSC score of 16 points, at least 40% in English or their native tongue, and at least 50% in life sciences or biology.
Advanced/Diploma in Nursing (3 years):
- The student must have completed Math, English, a First or Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science and have at least a matric education standard. The student must then register with the South African Nursing Council to become a nurse.
Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing (4 years):
- The student must have completed Math, English, a First or Home Language, Life Orientation, and Life Science and have at least a matric education standard. Last but not least, the student must register with the South African Nursing Council as a nurse, just like the requirements for enrolling in the diploma program.
Entry Requirements
To enroll in this course, you must possess a National Senior Certificate (NSC) or an equivalent qualification at exit levels 3 or 4, depending on the institution. However, for the BCur, it is not as important as it is for you to have taken math or physical science courses. You’ll also require:
- English (50-59%)
- First additional or home language (50-59%)
- Four other subjects (50-59%)
- Life Orientation (50-59%)
