Nursing encompasses both individual and group care for people of all ages, families, groups, and communities—whether they are ill or healthy—in any setting. It encompasses health promotion, disease prevention, and patient care for the disabled, ill, and dying. Each nurse will have particular strengths, interests, and areas of expertise due to the wide range of specializations and intricate skills required in the nursing profession.
- However, nursing has a common philosophy: Nurses don’t just look at the results of tests when evaluating a patient. Nurses use their judgment to integrate objective data with subjective experience of a patient’s biological, physical, and behavioral needs through the critical thinking exemplified in the nursing process (see below). This ensures that every patient, from community health centers to city hospitals; regardless of who they are or where they may be, everyone, from state prison to summer camp, receives the best possible care.
Who first gave nursing its name?
- The pioneer of modern nursing and professional nursing, Florence Nightingale (Figure 1), was born into an English family in Florence, Italy, in 1820. She was given the city where she was born.
