Aeronautical Group Pretoria

A global industry, aerospace (aeronautics and space) research and development. Future air transportation concerns including climate change and energy resource scarcity are driving top aviation research organizations like the CSIR, NASA, TsAGI, ONERA, DLR, and JAXA to combine their applied research efforts. To prepare the next generation of aerospace graduates for employment in the 21st Century Aerospace Industry, Applied Research will also become more and more integrated into the classroom.

The Aeronautical Group primarily works on alternate aircraft configurations and applied aerodynamics.

The CFD is currently focused on
  • Airframe propulsion integration
  • Design exploration and Optimization
The present focus of engineering education and design application is on
  • Alternative aircraft configurations
  • Application to UAVs

In South Africa, the first post-graduate honors program in aerospace engineering began in 2016. In order to address the most recent Research and Technology in the Aerospace sector, this Master has been developed in conjunction with the Aerospace Industry. Scientists and Professional Engineers from the CSIR, Paramount Advanced Technologies (PAT), Denel and Incomar Aerospace and Defense Systems will present courses in Aeroelasticity, Avionics, Advanced Aerodynamics, Aircraft Structure, Aircraft Propulsion, Missile Aerodynamics and Design, Flight Dynamics, Unmanned Air System Technology, and Experimental Methods (IADS).

An international, multidisciplinary, vertically integrated engineering design project is being run by the University of Pretoria’s Mechanical and Aeronautical Engineering Department with the goal of creating modular drone solutions for wildlife conservation applications. Dr. Lelanie Smith, the project’s manager and leader, organizes the design and collaboration efforts across regional and worldwide universities. Additionally, she collaborates closely with local business leaders who provide valuable mentoring and knowledge sharing to the project’s participating students.

Academics and researchers working in the broad subject of aerospace are welcome to visit and collaborate with the aeronautical group. Contact Dr. Lelanie Smith, the organizer of Aeronautical activities, for additional details.
