The word ‘innovative’ perfectly describes the spirit of North-West University (NWU). This trait pervades all of our activities and operations, from our academic offerings to the research we conduct, as well as our management model, campus structure, student body, citizen involvement, and athletic accomplishments.

The NWU is a unitary multi-campus institution with campuses spread across two provinces, each with its own distinct characteristics. Potchefstroom and Mafikeng campuses are in North West, while the Vaal Triangle Campus is in Gauteng. The Institutional Office (head office) is located in Potchefstroom, close to the Potchefstroom Campus.

  • The Mafikeng Campus, in the capital of the North West Province, has an international atmosphere, with students from 22 different countries enrolled. The Campus has a rural feel to it, with sturdy buildings and a secure environment. Its library is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.
  • Because of its demographic profile, the Potchefstroom Campus is located in the historical university town of Potchefstroom and currently uses Afrikaans as the primary medium of instruction at the undergraduate level. However, in order to improve access and success for non-Afrikaans speaking students, educational interpreting services in English are provided in certain teaching programs deemed strategic in terms of delivering high-quality graduates to the emerging South African economy.
  • The Vaal Triangle Campus, located on the banks of the Vaal River in a designated nature reserve, has a unique environmental setting, with various species of game roaming the campus grounds. The Campus is divided into two faculties: the Faculty of Humanities, which has four schools, and the Faculty of Economic Sciences and Information Technology, which has three schools.

Why study at such a forward-thinking and well-managed university?

NWU provides opportunities for personal development through entrepreneurial development, community service, sports, and cultural activities such as drama, music, and poetry. This exposure develops well-rounded graduates capable of pursuing successful careers, contributing to the community, and leading balanced, purposeful lives.

Furthermore, the NWU is establishing itself as a leading university, as evidenced by the following awards:

  • PricewaterhouseCoopers Higher Education Excellence Award for Corporate Governance in 2007.
  • Pan-South African Language Board (PanSALB) award in 2008 for contributing the most to multilingualism and nation-building in the South African higher education sector over the previous ten years.
  • The Department of Science and Technology named it the most progressive and technologically innovative university in South Africa in 2004.
