- The South African government provides social subsidies to residents in need. The SASSA is in charge of social grants in South Africa. People who are at risk of going hungry and need government support to raise their level of living can apply for social subsidies. Oftentimes, these include the elderly, those with impairments, and parents of young children. To be eligible for a social grant, you must be a South African citizen, lawful permanent resident, or refugee (proof of such status must be provided). Additionally, they must be South African citizens.
What is a means test?
- The SASSA will utilize the means test to establish your eligibility for a social grant based on your income and assets for some social grants, such as child support, disability, care dependency, and social alleviation of distress. Your eligibility for a grant intended for persons who cannot afford to live independently is determined by the means test.
Care dependency allowance
Parents of disabled children who work full-time may be eligible for care dependency grants. How much money will be dispersed overall as part of this grant?

How do you know if you’re eligible for the grant?
- To be eligible for the care dependency grant, the child must be under the age of 18 and permanently disabled, as determined by a medical officer.
