Seven local universities have science, math, and technology programs that are among the top in the world in the 2021 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject.
According to international competition, the QS rankings show which fields colleges excel in, paying close attention to academic reputation and research output.
The rankings of postsecondary institutions also take into account the results of significant global polls of employers and academics.
In the majority of the 11 science, math, and technology topics which local institutes participated, the University of Cape Town has emerged as the best institution. In eight subjects, UCT came in first (or tied for first).
The subjects of electrical engineering and mathematics, where the University of Pretoria was placed as the top institution in the nation, and mining engineering, where Wits was ranked first, were the exceptions (UCT did not rank).
South Africa also did best overall in mining engineering, with Wits and the University of Pretoria placing 13th and 48th, respectively, among the top 50 universities worldwide.
Other than in mining engineering, South Africa’s universities did not rank among the top 100 in the world. Only a limited range of placement data is provided by QS for universities that are not within the top 100.
The majority of the top-ranked chemical engineering universities were in South Africa.
