The department of higher education intends to develop a new student funding model, which may result in a considerable shift in tuition rates at South African universities.

The government has committed to and is constructing a comprehensive student funding model for universities and colleges, according to Blade Nzimande, minister of higher education, science, and innovation.

The new model is intended to take into consideration post-graduate students who are unable to get funding as well as those in the “missing middle” income band.

The minister previously this year proposed a CPI-linked hike in tuition fees for 2022, pointing out that the sector is significantly dependent on university tuition and residence fee income to continue active.

In South Africa, the first year of a degree typically costs around R62,000.

BusinessTech examined the costs associated with pursuing a range of degrees at some of the best universities in South Africa.

The following bachelor’s degrees were evaluated:

  • Bachelor of Commerce (BCom);
  • Bachelor of Arts (BA);
  • Bachelor of Science (BSc);
  • Bachelor of Law (LLB, undergraduate);
  • Bachelor of Science/Engineering (BEng).

The costs shown here provide a general sense of the cost of a single year of study rather than a detailed breakdown because fees are often assessed per module required to fulfill the credits of a certain degree.
