People who are in such dire need of money that they are unable to provide for their family’s or their own most basic needs are qualified for a temporary form of aid known as social relief of distress.
Citizens and permanent residents of South Africa who meet one or more of the conditions below and have limited resources are eligible for Social Relief of Distress.
- The applicant is expecting payment of a social grant that has been authorized.
- The applicant has been determined medically incapable to perform remunerative work for less than six months.
- The breadwinner has died, and the application is made within three months of his or her death.
- A parent, child, or spouse who is required by law to pay maintenance is not contacted, and there is proof that attempts to contact them have been unsuccessful.
- The breadwinner of that person’s family has been admitted to a state-funded institution (prison, psychiatric hospital, state home for older persons, treatment center for substance abuse, or child and youth care center).
- The Disaster Management Act and the Fund Raising Act, both of which were passed in 1978, both define a disaster, and have had an impact on the applicant.No other organization or person is assisting the individual.
- Refusing to apply for social relief of distress will result in undue hardship.
Period of Social Relief of Distress (New Policy)
- For a maximum of three months, Social Relief of Distress is distributed once a month. An extra three-month extension may be granted in rare situations.
- It should be kept in mind that a person who receives a social grant cannot also receive support for social distress. The value of social assistance must be returned by anyone who gets both grants and social assistance. All upcoming social aid payments, including arrears, will have this amount subtracted from them. However, if the recipient of a social grant also received disaster help, the money will not be returned.
