Only electronic submissions are accepted for the unique COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress grant. The SASSA staff and appointed volunteers can help if you need assistance with your application.

From the date it is approved, the Special COVID-19 Social Relief of Distress amount is R350 per month. There will be no backpay; applicants’ payments will begin in the month they submit their applications.

Applicants must be:

  • those who have registered with Home Affairs as South African citizens, permanent residents, or refugees;
  • a citizen of the Republic of South Africa who is over 18 years old and unemployed and resides within its borders.
  • Not receiving any income, receiving no social assistance, being ineligible for unemployment benefits, receiving no unemployment insurance benefits, receiving no stipend under the National Student Financial Aid Program, receiving no other government support under COVID-19, and not residing in a facility that is supported by or funded by the government.

What information is required:

  • Identity Number;
  • Name and Surname as captured in the ID (and initials);
  • Gender and Disability;
  • Banking details – Bank Name and Account Number;
  • Contact details – Cell phone number;
  • Proof of Residential Address;

Any applicant is not required to scan in supporting documents like an ID, a proof of address, or bank statements by SASSA.

By submitting an application, applicants authorize SASSA to compare their financial information with data sources held by governmental and financial organizations, such as the SA Revenue Services and banks, in order to verify their financial status and other information.

False information provided in an effort to receive the grant is illegal and will be prosecuted.

From 8:00 to 15:00, the Overstrand Thusong Service Center in Hawston will accept social handouts.
