The new Special Relief of Distress grant applications and payments began in August 2021. We now have a better understanding of how this installment of the R350 grant will work. Read on for all of the specifics.

This time around, Lindiwe Zulu, the Minister of Social Development, has provided specifics regarding how Special Relief of Distress grant payments will function.

A bank account will receive the grant. In order for SASSA to process the payment as soon as applicants meet the criteria, the new procedure will now require applicants to provide their banking information upfront.

You will then be able to get your grant money from a Post Office or a Bank Mobile Money transfer (cash send) if you do not have a bank account.

The applicant’s name must be registered for the bank account or mobile phone number used for payment.

The Minister stated in her briefing:

The system developed over the past year has been improved to manage the numbers of applicants and payments monthly. In addition, improvements continue to be made to improve the service to applicants.

She kept on saying that SASSA and the South African Mailing station are working diligently fostering extra channels through which supported candidates can get to their assets as the mail centers will never again be appropriating Sassa awards. Beneficiaries now have access to their funds through participating merchants and ATMs as a result of this.
