Industrial psychology is concerned with the effective development and utilization of human resources in the workplace. The Department, South Africa’s oldest Industrial Psychology department, has a tradition of academic distinction and aspires to provide top-quality graduates to all areas of the South African economy. The Department would want to see its graduates address current business-related people management issues in such a way that they earn the trust, respect, and appreciation of top management while also contributing to the development of South Africa’s rich human potential.

PROFESSIONAL REGISTRATION

The BCom (Industrial Psychology) and BComHons (Industrial Psychology) lead to registration as Psychometrist, while the MCom (Industrial Psychology) leads to registration as an Industrial Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa’s Professional Board for Psychology (HPCSA). The postgraduate Human Resource Management programs adhere to the regulations of the South African Board of Personnel Practice (SABPP). ​​

Furthermore, the Department also offers a new Postgraduate Diploma in Strategic Human Resource Management (PGDip Strategic HRM), that not only focuses on the strategic skills of HR professionals in providing business value in pursuit of an organization’s overall business goals. The curriculum was created with the help of top HR Directors, business executives, and thought leaders, assuring a cutting-edge approach to HR best practices that are matched with the realities and complexities of the new world of work. The PG Diploma provides a growth opportunity for graduates from any discipline who want to supplement their degrees with core HR Management knowledge and abilities while also investigating the strategic application of the HR function in organizations. The addition of this postgraduate certification aids further advancement.

The honours programs are presented full-time in English, which include –

Master’s degree programs include –

  • MCom in Human Resource Management – Full Thesis only
  • MCom in Industrial Psychology – Modular

The MCom Industrial Psychology is delivered in English in a modular manner (part-time over two years). Students enrolled in the modular course visit the Stellenbosch Campus three times per year for five weeks.

Candidates applying for PhD studies must have a master’s degree in Industrial Psychology or Human Resource Management with a final grade point average of at least 65%. The PhD research proposal requirements can be found here.
