Welcome to the Centre for Law and Medicine at the University of Pretoria. The Centre for Law and Medicine at the University of Pretoria is housed in the Faculty of Law’s Department of Public, in collaboration with the Faculty of Health Sciences’ Department of Forensic Medicine.

The Centre’s mission is to:

• a) conduct research and gain insight into medical law and ethics, medical jurisprudence and health care law, forensic medicine, forensic psychiatry and psychology, psychopharmacology bioethics, telemedicine, and any other related field or subject;
• b) create, promote, and provide expertise in these medico-legal fields; and
• c) aid in the advancement of law and medicine in Africa.

The Centre’s mission is carried out by:

• a) participation in academic programs of the Faculty of Law and/or the Faculty of Health Sciences, as applicable;
• b) self-initiated research projects on pertinent legal issues;
• c) a publication program to announce research findings (including an annual medico-legal journal);
• d) training to interested individuals, groups, and institutions (including so-called Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training);
• e) display of symposia, conferences, seminars, and workshops;
• f) gathering and disseminating information on national and international medico-legal issues;
• g) contact and collaboration with international experts and similar institutions both within and outside of South Africa;
• h) the creation and expansion of a database containing relevant research sources; and
• I any other activity that may contribute to the pursuit and promotion of the Centre’s mission and objectives.
