Nsfas Bursary Application 2024-2025
If you require financial assistance to support your tertiary education, consider applying for the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) bursary for the 2024-2025 academic year. The NSFAS online application window is available annually from September to November. This government-sponsored student financial aid scheme is designed to provide financial support to financially disadvantaged undergraduate students in South Africa, helping them cover the expenses of their higher education following high school graduation. The program is funded by the Department of Higher Education and Training (DHET).
What the Bursary covers
University Students
- Tuition Fees
- Accommodation As per the actual costs charged by the university (costs for private accommodation must not exceed costs for university residence)
- Transport (up to 40 km from the institution) R7 500 per year
- Living allowance of R15,000 per year
- Book allowances R5200 per year
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per year for students in catered residences
TVET College Students
- Tuition Fees
- Accommodation
- Urban area R24,000 per year
- Peri-urban area R18,900 per year
- Rural area R15,750 per year
- Transport
- up to 40 km from the institution R7,350 per year
- R7000 per year
- Incidental/personal care allowance R2900 per year
NSFAS will also provide assistive devices & human support for applicants with disabilities.
Who should apply?
To qualify for NSFAS funding, students will have to meet the following criteria:
- Must be a South African citizen.
- Academically deserving and can demonstrate the ability to succeed in your studies.
- Applied or are applying to study at a public university for a qualification.
- You need to have passed Grade 12 to receive NSFAS funding to study at a university.
- Applicants whose combined household income is not more than R350 000 per annum
- A person with a disability with a combined household income of no more than R600 000 per annum.
- Students who started studying before 2018 whose household income is not more than R122 000 per annum.
Your NSFAS application will not be considered if you
- received NSFAS funding in 2023.
- have already completed an undergraduate degree or diploma.
- are not South African citizens.
- need funding for a Short Learning Certificate or Programme or a postgraduate qualification.
Required Supporting Documents To Create NSFAS Account.
To complete your NSFAS Bursary Online Application for 2024-2025, you must have the following information:
- You must have a phone number and an email address of your own.
- A copy of your ID or birth certificate is required.
- You should also provide copies of your parents’, guardians’, or spouse’s identification cards.
- 1 year’s worth of IRP5 or proof of income (if applicable,)
- Proof of income from your parents, guardians, or spouse
- SASSA grant beneficiaries are not required to show proof of income.
- All disabled applicants must present a completed and signed Disability Annexure. A Document

How to Apply for NSFAS Online Application when opened
- Visit the NSFAS Application website: www.nsfas.org.za
- Then, you click on the ‘myNSFAS’ tab
- Create a myNSFAS account. If you don’t know how to create, click HERE
- Click on the ‘APPLY’ tab
- Update your personal information
- Answer the questions you see on the screen
- Upload all the required supporting documents
- Finally, you click on ‘submit
How to Check NSFAS Application Status
In order to check NSFAS Application Status, you must follow the simple steps below:
- Visit NSFAS Status website: www.nsfas.org.za
- Then, log in to myNSFAS account, if you don’t have one, create one. Click HERE
- Enter your User ID
- Type in the password you created during the application process.
- Click “Track Funding Progress” to check your NSFAS Application Status.
