In South Africa, midwives are nurses who take care of pregnant women and give birth. In cases of healthy pregnancies and trouble-free births, midwives can work independently; However, if complications are discovered, they may refer patients to gynecologists or obstetricians. In South Africa, midwives provide the majority of care to pregnant women who use the public healthcare system.

Under the Nursing Act, Act No. 3 of 2005, the midwifery profession is governed in South Africa. In South Africa, the midwifery profession is governed by the South African Nursing Council (SANC). Training can be completed as a four-year degree or a four-year diploma and covers parts of midwifery, general nursing, community nursing, and psychiatry.

Advanced Diploma in Midwifery 

  • The main goal of this qualification is to create competent midwives who can give patients, families, and communities with scientific, thorough, safe, and high-quality midwifery care while adhering to the law and ethical standards. The student can register as a midwife with the SANC after successfully completing this degree. All evaluations are carried out in accordance with the regulations governing the accreditation of institutions providing nursing education (NEI). This certification enables employability abroad.

Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery 

  • The goal of this certificate is to acquire knowledge and proficiency in midwifery as a specialty, including a thorough examination of theories, procedures, and research techniques in the area. The following objectives are included: screening, disease, injury, and complications prevention; screening, appropriate management; and patient referral to the best healthcare providers. All tests should adhere to the institution’s assessment policy for nursing and midwifery education (NEI). A master’s degree in nursing at NQF level 9 can be earned in conjunction with the postgraduate diploma. This certification enables employability abroad.

Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing and Midwifery 

  • The goal of this certification is to train competent Professional Nurse and Midwife practitioners who can work in a variety of healthcare service settings. The learner is eligible for registration as a Professional Nurse and Midwife with the relevant statutory body, which is currently the SANC, upon successful completion of this qualification. A nurse will be granted a license to practice as a Professional Nurse and Midwife upon successful registration. The NEI’s assessment policy should be followed in all assessments. This qualification makes it possible to work anywhere in the world.
