Chisholm TAFE’s Diploma of Nursing program is based on health care best practices. You will be able to work as an enrolled nurse under the supervision of a registered nurse after completing the course. You will acquire relevant competencies related to the various stages of life identified in the units you will study, which will enable you to provide nursing care to people in the health sector.

You will be eligible to apply to the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia, in accordance with the Australian Health Practitioner Regulation Agency (AHPRA), for registration as an enrolled nurse if you successfully complete the Diploma of Nursing program.

If you are able to successfully complete this diploma, you will be eligible, subject to availability, to enter the second year of La Trobe University’s Bachelor of Nursing (Enrolled Nurse). The Frankston and Berwick campuses of Chisholm offer courses leading to the La Trobe degree.

The Diploma of Nursing requires both on-the-job and off-the-job training. The theoretical portion of the course is the off-the-job training, which combines on-campus instruction with simulations in a nursing skills laboratory.

  • All placements will be allocated per the nursing timetable, broken up over a total of 10 weeks (400 hours) across the whole course.
    – aged care (two weeks)
    – mental health /rehabilitation combined (four weeks)
    – acute (four weeks).TIMETABLE:
    Semester 1 – Four days a week. 9am – 3.30pm.
    Semester 2 – Four days a week. 9am – 3.30pm.
    Semester 3 – Four days a week. 9am – 3.30pm.

Each scheduled day consists of two sessions: integrated clinical skills, or lecture. Depending on the timetables for each group, attendance will vary across both campuses.

The majority of clinical placement attendance will take place Monday through Friday, but some facilities can schedule on weekends and holidays. You will have a clinical placement for ten weeks. You may be required to work a morning or afternoon shift throughout the placement allocation, typically a combination of both shifts.

When a prospective student applies for registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia (NMBA), Chisholm Institute is required to disclose how the student will satisfy the English Language Requirements. The Australian Nursing and Midwifery Accreditation Council recently updated the evidence requirements for registration, and the Chisholm enrollment procedures comply with those requirements. Before enrolling, students who are told they need to take an English test at registration must show that they can do so.

During the application process, you will be asked to complete documentation to show how you will meet the English language requirements and provide any necessary evidence. The Diploma of Nursing Information Pack that you will receive upon submitting your application contains comprehensive information regarding the English language requirements and the required evidence.

Kindly note: HLT54115 Diploma of Nursing is replaced by this course. There may be additional assessment work required for non-equivalent units if you have begun HLT54115 and require credit transfers of any units. In order to transition to the new qualification, we will provide you with the necessary information.
