Recognition of Prior Learning For Nursing and Midwifery Education

  • To get into programs for nurses and midwives, applicants typically need to have at least a high school diploma. The Nursing Council is committed to the principles of equity and accessibility and facilitates entry to programs through non-traditional means because it recognizes that learning can and does occur outside of traditional channels.
  • Educators on the Nursing Council are rigorously defining Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) as an assessment process that determines the extent to which an applicant has achieved the required competencies and standards for entry into these programs on the basis of this. The RPL Program, which the Council is developing as the regulatory body for nursing and midwifery education, will be communicated to institutions that offer those programs for implementation. In order to ensure that the RPL system does not compromise the specifics of academic and clinical standards for nursing and midwifery education and practice, applicants’ assessors will be required to consider professional and statutory accredited studies.
  • The Council will only approve credit recognition for previous academic accomplishments if the prior learning is comparable to the units of study in the relevant programs in terms of content, quality, award, and duration. It is necessary to adhere to the Council’s guidelines.

As a result, PLAR is not yet accepted as an entry requirement for Nursing and Midwifery education.
