The nursing code of ethics is a guide for “carrying out nursing responsibilities in a manner consistent with quality in nursing care and the ethical obligations of the profession,” as stated by the American Nurses Association (ANA). The moral principles that guide a person’s behavior are referred to as ethics. Ethical principles are especially important in nursing due to their role as caregivers, but ethical values are important for all healthcare workers.
The nursing code of ethics is made up of four main tenets. They exist,
- Autonomy
- Beneficence
- Justice
- Non-maleficence
These standards are in a perfect world what each medical caretaker ought to know about in their everyday nursing practice. Ethical principles ought to be constants in nursing practice in order to provide the best, safest, and most humane care to all patients, despite the fact that they can be confusing and frequently only briefly taught to undergraduate nurses.
History of the Nursing Code of Ethics
- It is interesting to note that the “Nightingale Pledge,” in honor of Florence Nightingale, the pioneer of modern nursing, is said to have been established in 1893. Since its inception, the Nightingale Pledge has been recited by nursing students at graduations. It is a modified version of the Hippocratic Oath, which is taken by medical doctors.
- The American Nurses Association (ANA) developed the formal code of ethics in the 1950s and has since undergone numerous revisions. In 2015, nine interpretative statements or provisions were added to the code of ethics to help guide nursing practice in a more definitive manner. This was the most recent significant change.
- The ANA’s nursing code of ethics is incorporated into practice statements in many states. The code of ethics has legal implications as well, despite the fact that its primary focus is on ethics. Given the significance of the code to the nursing calling, updates progress forward with a normal premise.
9 Provisions of the Nursing Code of Ethics
There are currently nine main provisions in the nurse’s code of ethics:
- The nurse treats each patient with compassion and reverence for their inherent worth, dignity, and individuality.
The patient, whether an individual, family, group, community, or population, is the nurse’s primary commitment.
The nurse upholds, defends, and upholds the patient’s rights, health, and safety.
The nurse is in charge of nursing practice and is accountable for it; makes choices; and acts in accordance with the obligation to provide the best possible patient care.
The nurse has the same obligations to herself as she does to others, such as maintaining competence, promoting health and safety, maintaining wholeness of character, and continuing personal and professional growth.
Through individual and collective effort, the nurse creates, maintains, and enhances the ethical work environment and employment conditions that are conducive to safe, high-quality health care.
Through research and scholarly inquiry, the development of professional standards, and the creation of nursing and health policy, the nurse advances the profession in all settings and roles.
To safeguard human rights, promote health diplomacy, and reduce health disparities, the nurse works with other health professionals and the general public.
Through its collective professional organization, the nursing profession must articulate its values, uphold the profession’s integrity, and incorporate social justice principles into health policy.
