Any action a nurse takes to assist patients in achieving their desired outcomes is an example of a nursing intervention. Nursing interventions include physical treatments, emotional support, and patient education. These actions are typically carried out by nurses as part of a care plan to monitor and enhance the health and comfort of their patients.

Types of nursing interventions

  • For the benefit of their patients’ health, nurses use a variety of interventions. Some treatments can be done on your own, while others require guidance from a doctor. Patient care may be provided collaboratively or by a single nurse working with a patient from beginning to end.
  • As a registered nurse, you might be expected to perform these three kinds of nursing interventions.

Independent nursing interventions

  • Nurses are professionals in the health care industry who are permitted to act independently. As a result, an action that a nurse can carry out on their own without the assistance of a doctor or another professional is known as an independent nursing intervention.
  • Taking a patient’s temperature or providing basic comfort care are examples of independent nursing tasks.

Interdependent nursing interventions

  • Before a nurse can carry out some interventions, a doctor or other medical professional must give them the go-ahead. These nursing interventions are referred to as dependent or physician-initiated.
  • A nurse cannot, for instance, administer medication or administer vaccinations without the guidance of a physician.

Interdependent nursing interventions

  • Collaborative interventions are another name for interdependent nursing interventions. For a patient’s care and complete recovery from these activities, a team of medical professionals must collaborate.
  • When a collaborative intervention is required, nurses carry out tasks under the direction of various disciplines and ensure that all parties involved in patient care communicate about care.

More than 500 interventions from all medical care settings and specialties are detailed in the comprehensive Nursing Interventions Classification (NIC) publication, which is based on research. Numerous medical organizations around the world have adopted the NIC classification system, which provides a standardized classification system for nursing interventions.

The NIC categorizes each and every nursing intervention into seven distinct domains.
