Kardex is a tool that nurses use to share important patient information.
A desktop file system known as a Kardex is updated each shift and provides a brief overview of each patient. It’s like having a separate, easily accessible cheat sheet for nurses to use. For easy access, it is typically kept in a central location like the nursing station.
The original cardstock system’s brand name and trademark is Kardex. The initial system was a desktop file with slots for multiple pages, similar to a large rolodex. Each patient’s individual thick cardstock pages were inserted into the slots. Each shift was updated on the pages, which were written on in pencil.
As the Kardex system has progressed over time, some nursing units have produced electronic versions that can be printed and updated on a computer.
Uses of the Kardex in Nursing
- The Kardex is used in nursing as a quick reference guide for specific patient needs. Let’s return to our earlier characters. Jamie is informed by the mentor that she must reference the Kardex when receiving reports from the departing nurse when she arrives on shift and is assigned a patient. She will be able to update the Kardex in this way, which will help her remember important information about her patient’s care.
