Fundamental to the practice of nursing is the crucial decisions that must be made promptly in order to provide effective patient care. Doctoral-level nurse researchers are frequently included on grant review and study section teams by national funding agencies like the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI), and the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA).

• In the history of nursing science, Nursing Research has a long and distinguished track record. Since its inception in 1952, Nursing Research has been a “cooperative venture” of researchers, professional organizations, publishers, editorial staff, and readers to distribute nursing-related scientific papers with the goal of enhancing care, relieving suffering, and promoting well-being. The official journal of the Eastern Nursing Research Society (ENRS) and the Western Institute of Nursing (WIN), Nursing Research continues to be a leading journal in the field.

Evidence-based nursing practice-supporting research is known as nursing research. Since Florence Nightingale’s time, nursing as an evidence-based field of practice has grown to the point where many nurses now work as researchers in both the healthcare setting and universities.

The use of research-based evidence to justify nursing interventions is emphasized in nurse education. In England and Wales, courts can look at whether a nurse’s intervention was supported by research to determine whether they acted reasonably.

The majority of nursing research is done in two areas:

• Quantitative research is grounded in the logical positivist philosophy and focuses on measurable client outcomes, typically utilizing statistics. The randomized controlled trial is the most popular research methodology.
• Qualitative research analyzes the experience of individuals receiving or providing nursing care, concentrating in particular on the meaning that it contains for the individual. It is founded on the paradigms of phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and others. The most popular research techniques are ethnography, case studies, focus groups, and interviews.
