The National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) offers financial assistance to students enrolled in TVET colleges and public universities. It’s important to note that only students who meet the specified Requirements for NSFAS Funding for the year 2024-2025 will be eligible to receive an NSFAS bursary. This article will provide you with information about the necessary requirements for NSFAS funding.

This is a Requirement That All Applicants Must Meet.

Before submitting their applications, applicants should ensure that they meet the following minimum entry criteria to prevent any potential denial by the NSFAS board.

  • South African citizenship is a requirement for all applicants.
  • All individuals receiving SASSA grants are eligible for funding.
  • Applicants are eligible if their combined household income does not exceed R350,000 per year.
  • For individuals with disabilities, the combined household income limit is R600,000 annually.
  • Students who commenced their studies prior to 2018 are eligible if their household income is no more than R122,000 per year.

What documents are needed to apply for NSFAS?

  • A copy of your ID is a mandatory requirement.
  • To finalize the registration process, you must possess a copy of your ID. If you have an ID card, please ensure that you upload a copy showing both sides of the card.
  • It is necessary to obtain an NSFAS consent form from your parent(s), guardian, or spouse to submit your personal information for validation and verification. By accepting the relevant terms and conditions, you confirm that you have obtained consent from all pertinent parties.

If You Rely On Your Parents, Guardians, Or Spouse, You Must Supply The Following:

  • ID copies of parent(s), guardian, or spouse.
  • Proof of income of the parent(s), guardian, or spouse (payslip or appointment letter, where applicable).
  • If your parents, the person who supports you, or your legal guardian are retired, provide a copy of an official pension slip or bank statement showing pension payment.
  • If you have mentioned that a household dependent is a student, please furnish evidence of their enrollment or acceptance at the TVET college or university for each dependent.

You Must Offer The Following If You Are Self-Sufficient:

  • Proof of income (payslip or appointment letter).
  • 1 year’s IRP5 form.

If The Student Is Disabled, They Must Provide The Following

    • If the information is not pre-populated on the online application form, you need to complete and sign the Disability Annexure A Form.
    • Along with the application form, you must include evidence of your disability and a quotation for assistive devices as supporting documents. The approval process for funding assistive devices is the same as for financial aid.
    • Once your application for financial aid is successful, and you receive notification of the final approval amount from NSFAS, you can make arrangements to acquire your assistive device through the student disability unit at the university or FET college where you plan to study. The university or FET college can facilitate the purchase of the assistive device on your behalf.

Vulnerable Students (children under 18 years), Must Provide:

  • A social worker is required to fill out and sign the Vulnerable Child Declaration and Consent Form in its entirety.

Other Nsfas Online Applications Required Documents

  • Retrenchment letter.
  • Provide Death certificate/s if either of your parents is deceased.
  • Divorce decree.
