Social grant increases announced by Minister of Finance Enoch Godongwana do not keep up with inflation.

Godongwana stated that the medium-term funding of R58.6 billion would “provide for inflationary increases” to permanent grants. However, the awards won’t really increase however much the ongoing expansion pace of 5.7% every year. Furthermore, the increase in the Foster Care Grant is less than 2%.

This year’s changes to grants:
