According to recent announcements, the majority of recipients of the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant are young people, with 5% having a tertiary education. The youth unemployment crisis is hopeless, as this number demonstrates.

Youth Applying For SRD Grant Reflects High Youth Unemployment

  • According to a recent announcement made by the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa), 5% of people who receive the Social Relief of Distress (SRD) grant possess a tertiary qualification.
  • At first, the declaration was that 60% of candidates for the SRD award are comprised of adolescents. Paseka Letsatsi, a spokesperson for Sassa, has since corrected that number, stating that only 5% of grant recipients possess a tertiary qualification.
  • This 5 percent is not always just young people. According to Letsatsi, it’s a mix of young people and people who aren’t considered to be young.
  • Too many recent graduates are left out in the cold when trying to get a job and provide for themselves and their families, even though they have improved their skills, increased their education, and obtained some kind of qualification.
  • The purpose of the grant, which is also referred to as the R350 grant, is to offer recipients some relief from the negative effects of Covid-19. Social Relief of Distress is given to citizens or permanent residents of South Africa who don’t have enough money and meet one or more of the requirements.
  • The system of finishing primary school, matriculating from high school, choosing a career to study at a tertiary institution, and finally looking for a good job with your qualifications is both encouraged and the norm.
  • However, the path that many young people in South Africa choose is not easy or straightforward, and the pressure to survive begins to build. As a result of the staggering youth unemployment rate, many have turned to apply for the SRD grant for some form of income.
  • The thought is that whenever you’ve moved on from a tertiary organization, you’d be well-positioned to become utilized and procure respectable compensation. The fact that grant recipients are youth with tertiary education speaks volumes about South Africa’s youth unemployment crisis and overall unemployment rate.
  • Letsatsi says they know about the ongoing joblessness reality South Africa thinks of itself as in, and that the association is giving it its best shot to help the people who have applied and process their applications as fast as could be expected.
  • “Remains committed to playing its part in fighting unemployment,” Sassa stated, acknowledging how alarming the youth’s decision to seek government assistance is.
