SASSA is well-known for distributing social grants to South Africans in need; however, do they provide loans? Keep reading to find out.

The South African Social Security Agency aims to provide quality customer-centric social security services to eligible beneficiaries through grants.

SASSA offers a variety of grants to South African citizens, including the Care Dependency Grant, Child Support Grant, Disability Grant, Foster Child Grant, Grant-In-Aid, Older Persons Grant, Social Relief of Distress, and War Veterans Grant.

SASSA does not provide loans to beneficiaries; however, eligible beneficiaries are encouraged to apply for their social grants.

Those interested in applying for the Care Dependency Grant must meet the following criteria:

• A South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee is required.
• Both the applicant and the child must be South African citizens.
• The child must be younger than 18 years old.
• A medical / assessment report confirming permanent, severe disability must be submitted by the applicant.
• The applicant and spouse must meet the means test requirements (except for foster parents).
• The care-dependent child or children must not be institutionalized indefinitely.

To be eligible for the Child Support Grant, you must meet the following criteria:

A South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee must be the primary caregiver.
Both the applicant and the child must be South African citizens.

• The applicant must be the primary caregiver for the child(ren) in question.
• The child or children must be born after December 31, 1993.
• The applicant and spouse must meet the means test requirements.
• The applicant may only apply for a maximum of six non-biological children.
• In-state institutions are unable to care for the child.

Those who want to apply for the Disability Grant must meet the following requirements:

• A South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee is required.
  The applicant must be a South African citizen.
• The applicant must be between the ages of 18 and 59.
• A medical / assessment report confirming permanent, severe disability must be submitted by the applicant.
• The applicant’s medical evaluation must be no more than three months old at the time of application.
• The applicant and spouse must meet the means test requirements.
• The applicant cannot be housed or cared for in a state institution.
• The applicant may not receive another social grant in his or her own name.

Citizens who meet the following criteria are eligible for the Foster Child Grant:

• A South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee must be the foster parent.
• Both the applicant and the child must be South African citizens.
• The foster parent must continue to care for the child (s).

Those interested in applying for the Grant-In-Aid must meet the following requirements:

• The applicant must be awarded an Older Persons Grant.
• Disability or War Veteran’s grants are required, as is full-time attendance by another person.
• Because of physical or mental disabilities.
• Must not be cared for in an institution that receives a state subsidy for such a beneficiary’s care/housing.

To be eligible for the Older Persons Grant, you must meet the following criteria:

• A South African citizen, permanent resident, or refugee is required.
  Both the applicant and the child must be South African citizens.
  Must be at least 60 years old.
  The applicant must not be the recipient of any other social grant.
  The applicant and his or her spouse must pass the means test.
  The applicant cannot be housed or cared for in a state institution.
  A 13-digit bar-coded identity document must be submitted by the applicant.

Those who want to apply for Social Relief of Distress must meet the following requirements:

• The applicant is awaiting payment of a social grant that has been approved.
• The applicant has been determined medically unfit to perform remunerative work for less than six months.
• The breadwinner has died, and the application is made within three months of his or her death.
• No maintenance is received from a parent, child, or spouse who is legally required to pay maintenance, and proof that efforts to obtain maintenance have been futile is provided.
• The breadwinner of that person’s family has been admitted to a state-funded institution (prison, psychiatric hospital, state home for older persons, treatment center for substance abuse, or child and youth care center).
• The applicant has been affected by a disaster as defined by the Disaster Management Act or the Fund Raising Act, both of which were enacted in 1978.
• No other organization or person is assisting the individual.
• Refusing to apply for social relief of distress will result in an undue hardship.

Citizens who meet the following criteria are eligible for the War Veterans Grant:

• The applicant must be a citizen or permanent resident of South Africa.
  The applicant must be a South African resident.
  The applicant must be at least 60 years old or disabled.
  The applicant must have served in either World War II or the Korean War.
  The applicant and spouse must meet the means test requirements.
  The applicant cannot be housed or cared for in a state institution.
  The applicant cannot receive another social grant for himself or herself.

Can I get a loan from SASSA?

• Sassa provides the option to borrow money from private financial institutions such as Moneyline. Clients who have received disability grants can apply for a personal loan of up to R1 500. When applying for this loan, you must provide a medical certificate as proof of diagnosis.
