The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) was established in April 2005 as a national government agency to administer social benefits on behalf of the Department of Social Development. It was also created to shift responsibility for social security from the provinces to the national government, with reports to the Department of Social Development (DSD).

The Bill of Rights in the South African Constitution (Sections 24-29) recognizes citizens’ socioeconomic rights. As a result, the government uses reasonable legislative and other measures within its available resources to gradually realize this individual right. It should also be noted that the SASSA Act of 2004 governs SASSA.

Sassa Grants Available for Payment in May 2024-2025

The following methods of social assistance are available:

• A child support grant; a pension for the elderly;
• A disability grant; a war veteran’s grant; a care dependency grant for caring for a severely disabled child;
  Foster child assistance;
• Grant-in-aid, for those who require a full-time caregiver; and/or Social relief of distress, a temporary measure in the form of parcels or vouchers for those in desperate need. Steyn has committed R320 million to the coronavirus relief effort.

Applicants for the May 2024 Sassa Payment must provide the following information:

• Department of Home Affairs or Identity Number Number of refugee permits
  Gender and Disability Gender and Surname as recorded in the Identity Document
  Contact information – mobile phone number
  Residence Address
