Sassa social grant recipients will have to make alternative arrangements to collect their payments. This follows the agency’s recent announcement about its grant collection systems.

As an alternative, Sassa grant recipients have been advised to withdraw cash from retailers and ATMs. This comes after it was revealed on Thursday that the agency’s grant payment systems at the Post Office were affected by system errors.

As a result, social grant withdrawals can only be made at any authorized retail location in the country that provides the cashback feature, such as Shoprite, Checkers, Usave, Pick n Pay, and Boxer.

According to Acting Postbank CEO Lucas Ndala, the system failure at Post Office outlets impacted all Postbank customers intending to conduct over-the-counter transactions, including deposits and withdrawals.

We apologise to our SASSA social grants beneficiaries and Postbank customers for the inconvenience caused as we take every service interruption seriously. Our IT teams have been tasked to resolve the technical challenges affecting the over-the-counter branch transactions as a matter of urgency.

He went on to say that when one of the National Payment System’s access points fails, the impact on customers is mitigated by Sassa’s use of a fully functional bank card.

Sassa grant recipients can use their Sassa Gold cards to make purchases at any location that accepts bank cards because they operate entirely within the country’s payment system, just like any other bank card.

All Sassa beneficiaries and stakeholders have also been assured by the Post Office and Sassa that once the problem has been resolved, Postbank will notify everyone.

Abraham Mahlangu, the acting CEO of Sassa, added that the organization will continue to diversify its grant payment channels in order to reduce reliance on any one specific access point while continuing to pay the appropriate social grant to qualifying individuals at the appropriate time and location.
