As per measurements, starting around 2019 around 18 million South Africans got social awards from Sassa. These people are either at risk of falling into poverty or have a pressing need for financial assistance.

The number of people needing monetary help expanded because of the Coronavirus pandemic. Many people were unable to work or lost their jobs during this time, necessitating urgent government assistance for survival.

Child Support Grant

Older Persons Grant

To be eligible for the SASSA older person grant, applicants must meet certain requirements. To be eligible for the grant, the individual must satisfy a set of requirements. You will get somewhere in the range of R1890 and R1910 relying on your age.

To qualify for the older persons grant the applicant must:

  • be a refugee, a permanent resident, or a citizen of South Africa.
  • be a South African citizen.
  • not younger than sixty years.
  • not receive a second social grant for themselves.
  • The means test must be passed by both the applicant and their spouse.
  • Not be kept up with or really focused on in a State Establishment.
  • Submit a 13-digit identity document with a bar code.

Disability Grant

The recipient of this grant will receive R1890 per month while they live with a disability.

To qualify for the grant, the applicant must:

  • be a refugee, a permanent resident, or a citizen of South Africa.
  • be a South African citizen.
  • Between the ages of 18 and 59.
  • Submit a medical or assessment report indicating a severe, permanent impairment.
  • Provide a medical evaluation that was completed within three months of the application date.
  • Meet the prerequisites of the means test (counting mate).
  • Not be kept up with or really focused on in a State Establishment.
  • not be receiving a second social grant for himself or herself.

War Veterans Grant

This grant is intended for individuals who are unable to support themselves but served in the Second World War (1939–45) or the Korean War (1950–53).

The requirements to get this grant are:

  • be a South African citizen or permanent resident
  • live in South Africa
  • be 60 years of age or older or be disabled
  • have fought in the Second World War or the Korean War
  • not receive any other social grant for yourself
  • not be cared for in a state institution
  • not earn more than R 86 280 if you are single or R172 560 if married
  • not have assets that are worth more than R 2 455 200 or R 2 227 600 if you are married.

Care Dependency Grant

If you care for a child who has a severe disability and requires full-time and specialized care, you may be eligible for this grant. Each month, recipients of this grant receive R1890.

The requirements for this grant are:

  • The applicant must be a refugee, permanent resident, or citizen of South Africa.
  • The applicant and the child must be South African residents.
  • The child must be under 18 years old.
  • A medical or assessment report confirming a severe, permanent disability is required from the applicant.
  • With the exception of foster parents, the applicant and spouse must meet the means test requirements.
  • The dependent child or children cannot remain in a state institution for an extended period of time.

Foster Child Grant

The foster parent receives a child foster care grant in accordance with a court order. They will get R1050 each month.

The requirements for this grant are:

  • The foster parent must be a refugee, permanent resident,, or citizen of South Africa.
  • South Africa must be where both the applicant and the child live.
  • The foster parent(s) must continue to look after the child.

Grant In Aid

In addition to another grant, this is used to pay for medical expenses, purchase healthy food, and compensate the caretaker. Each month, recipients of this will receive R460.

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • The applicant must be receiving an Older Person Grant.
  • a disability grant or a grant for veterans of the war, and another person must attend full-time.
    due to their mental or physical limitations
  • Must not be cared for in a facility that receives a state subsidy for the beneficiary’s housing or care.

Covid-19 Special Relief of Distress Grant

During the Covid-19 pandemic, the Special Relief of Distress Grant was made available to unemployed individuals. Then, they would get R350 per month.

The requirements are as follows:

  • The candidate is anticipating the installment of a supported social award.
  • The applicant has been found to be medically unfit to work for pay for less than six months.
  • The applicant submits their application within three months of the deceased breadwinner’s death.
  • There is no evidence that a parent, child, or spouse is legally obligated to pay maintenance, and efforts to obtain maintenance have been unsuccessful.
  • The family’s breadwinner has been admitted to a state-funded facility (prison, psychiatric hospital, state home for the elderly, substance abuse treatment center, or child and youth care center).
  • The Disaster Management Act or the Fund Raising Act of 1978 defines a disaster as one that has affected the applicant.
  • The individual does not receive support from any other organization.
  • The refusal to apply for social support will result in undue hardships.
