The South African government provides social grants to citizens in need. The SASSA is in charge of social grants in South Africa. People who are at risk of going hungry and need government assistance to raise their standard of living can apply for social grants. Oftentimes, these include the elderly, those with disabilities, and parents of young children. To be eligible for a social grant, you must be a South African citizen, legal permanent resident, or refugee (proof of such status must be provided). Additionally, they must be South African citizens.

What is a means test?

  • A “means test” is applied to some social benefits, including child support, disability, care dependency, and social relief of distress. Based on your income and assets, SASSA will use the means test to determine whether you qualify for a social grant. Your eligibility for a grant intended for people who cannot afford to live independently is determined by the means test.

Care dependency allowance

Parents who work full-time and have disabled children may be eligible for care dependence grants. How much money will be distributed in total as part of this grant?

How do you know if you’re eligible for the grant?

  • To be eligible for the care dependency grant, the child must be under the age of 18 and permanently disabled, as determined by a medical officer. If you’re married, you and your spouse must both meet the minimum eligibility standards for the means test. The articles below will assist you with your Sassa application.
