A one-time gift given to a person in extreme need is called a Social Relief of Distress grant. Those who are unable to provide for their families or their basic needs will benefit from the award. The donation might take the form of money, gift cards, or food. You must fulfill one of the requirements listed below in order to be eligible for Social Relief of Distress:

• You require assistance while you await the processing of your children’s grants.
  There has been a crisis or calamity (e.g. your house has burnt down)
  You are in a critical circumstance and do not qualify for a grant.
• you are unable to work for fewer than six months due to a medical condition
• You are unable to obtain maintenance from your child or the children’s other parent.
• The family’s breadwinner has died.
• The breadwinner has been imprisoned for a brief period of time (less than six months)
• You have been impacted by a disaster, but your neighborhood or community has not been designated as a disaster area.

What results do you get?

• A food box or a food voucher can be used for social distress relief. Several provinces offer financial assistance. Only a short time, typically three months, with a potential extension of another three months, is provided for social relief of distress.

What you must do
Apply for social distress relief at your nearest South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office or online at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/.
Please include the following documents with your application:

• your 13-digit barcoded identification document, as well as your children’s birth certificates
• If you don’t have a birth certificate or an identity document:
• a Justice of the Peace’s commissioned affidavit The affidavit must state that giving false or deceptive information will result in punishment under Section 21 of the Social Assistance Act of 2004.
• a sworn statement from a reliable source who is familiar with both the applicant and the child. This could come from a councilman, religious leader, social worker, or professional from the community.
• evidence that an application for a birth certificate or other identification document has been submitted to the Department of Home Affairs
• if applicable, a temporary identity document from the Department of Home Affairs.
