What is an SRNA?

  • A registered nurse who is currently enrolled in a program to become a nurse anesthetist is known as an SRNA nurse. A state-registered nurse aide, which refers to a certified nurse aide in Kentucky, is not to be confused with this. An SRNA can earn licensure and certification as a CRNA after completing their training. This advanced practice nurse is responsible for administering anesthesia to patients and monitoring their condition while they are receiving or recovering from anesthesia. During operations, CRNAs collaborate with medical teams to develop an individual plan for each patient’s anesthesia care.
  • A person must work as a licensed registered nurse for at least one year in order to become an SRNA. However, it is not unheard of for individuals to acquire additional professional experience prior to enrolling in graduate programs to become nurse anesthetists. A person can become a CRNA in as little as 8.5 years—roughly 9,400 hours on average—after graduating from high school, with approximately three of those years spent working as an SRNA.

What does an SRNA do?

An SRNA spends their days learning how to be a certified registered nurse anesthetist as a student. The specific responsibilities of an SRNA may vary by school year. The didactic portion of a nurse anesthetist program’s first year focuses primarily on coursework. The second year includes clinical learning in addition to a significant amount of coursework. The SRNA spends the majority of their final year of the program continuing their clinical education, with a likely research project in the second semester.

An SRNA’s clinical day might include some or all of the following:

  • observing CRNAs or anesthesiologists as they carry out their responsibilities
  • Examining patient charts and histories, conducting preoperative anesthesia assessments, and writing preoperative notes.
  • Noting any patient allergies or comorbidities that may affect the plan of anesthesia care.
  • Educating patients about the plan of anesthesia care and providing counsel.
  • Helping to prepare patients for anesthesia.
  • Checking or maintaining anesthesia equipment used during surgery.
  • Assisting a CRNA during a surgery.
  • Monitoring a patient
