This page will teach you how to study in London from South Africa in 2024-2025.

The Tier 4 Student Visa has been replaced as the new immigration route for students by the UK Student Route. This new route is intended for South African and other students, including those from the European Economic Area (EEA), who want to study in the United Kingdom.

If the Home Office accepts your application for a Student Visa, you will be able to move from South Africa to the UK to study and will be able to stay for the duration of your studies. You will need to return to South Africa once you have finished. If you want to stay in the UK, you can either apply to extend your student visa if you intend to continue studying or choose a different immigration route if you have completed your studies, such as a Tier 1 Graduate Entrepreneur Visa or a Skilled Worker Visa.

You can work in the UK on a Student Visa in addition to living and studying, but this is limited to a maximum of 20 hours per week or 10 hours per week if your course is undergraduate. It’s also worth noting that this includes both unpaid and paid work.

What are the requirements for a South African student visa to the United Kingdom?
As a South African citizen, you must meet several requirements in order to apply for a UK Student Visa. Among these requirements are:

  • Having a course offer from a registered UK educational facility
demonstrating your ability to financially support yourself and any dependents while in the UK
Taking and passing an English language test from a reputable provider (you may not have to do this if you have a degree that was taught in English)
If you are under the age of 18, obtain permission from your parents.

To meet these requirements, you must submit documents as evidence with your application. Our immigration attorneys can assist you in gathering any documents required for your UK visa application and fully explain each requirement to you.

How do I apply for a South African Student Visa?
If you are applying for a UK Student Visa from South Africa, you must apply at least 6 months before the start of your course. If you have already left South Africa and are in the UK, you can apply three months before the start of your course.

You must apply for a Student Visa online using the form on the gov.uk website. In addition to completing the online form, you will be required to provide your biometric information, which includes your fingerprints and a photograph, to a visa application center in South Africa. South Africa has five centers, which are located in Pretoria, Johannesburg, Durban, Cape Town, and Port Elizabeth. If you are unable to visit any of these centers, you will need to travel to a center in another country.

When applying to study in the UK, you will need several documents, including:

  • A current passport or other valid travel documentation
A Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) from your course provider
A copy of your Tuberculosis test results

Depending on your circumstances, you may be asked to provide additional documents to support your UK study visa application.
