There are fifty registered and certified public TVET institutions in South Africa, with 364 campuses spread across the country’s rural and urban areas.
The Continuing Education and Training Act 16 of 2006 enables the creation and administration of public TVET colleges, which are overseen by the Department of Higher Education and Training.
Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges provide training that is defined as vocational or occupational in nature. This means that the student’s education and training will be geared toward a certain set of occupations, career paths, or entrepreneurial prospects.

Agriculture, arts and culture, business, hospitality, commerce and management, education, training and development, engineering, manufacturing and technology, services, building construction, and security are all courses that TVET Colleges can provide.

To make it affordable, studying at a public TVET college has reasonable prices. Students can apply for scholarships and loans to assist them to pay their tuition fees, and the Department of Higher Education and Training covers 80% of the delivery costs. In 2015, about 200 000 TVET students would benefit from DHET subsidies provided by the National Student Financial Aid Scheme. (NSFAS).
