The 26 public universities in South Africa are united under the name of Universities South Africa. All nine of South Africa’s provinces contain them. Every province has at least one university, and in the past eight years, the provinces of Mpumalanga and the Northern Cape have both added their own educational facilities (2014-2015).
The three provinces with the highest populations—Gauteng, KwaZulu-Natal, and the Western Cape—are home to the bulk of universities.
South African public universities are classified into three types:
- Traditional Universities: These universities offer university degree programs that are theoretically oriented.
- Universities of Technology (“Technikons”): These institutions offer vocational diploma and degree programs.
- Comprehensive universities offer a combination of traditional university qualifications and university of technology qualifications.
